As part of our cultural exploration of the north, we took a trip to Chiang Rai for two days to immerse ourselves in the lifestyle of the Thai hill tribes to the north.
We began our first day at 6 AM, taking part in a local custom of giving alms to the monks. We lined up with packages of food, and each student took turns with a wai (bow) and giving their gift. Monks don’t eat unless food is given to them, so locals take part in this practice every day. Then the monks chanted and blessed us. What a great way to begin an epic day!
When we arrived in Chiang Rai, we spent the day trekking and exploring the local hill tribe villages. We took long boats down the river to begin the trek, passing beautiful greenery and scenery. We arrived at the village where we met our local hiking guide, who explained the surrounding area.

The first part of the trek took us through rice paddies, but soon we started climbing into the surrounding mountains. For lunch, the locals cooked food inside bamboo rods in the traditional style, including egg cooked in bamboo which was definitely a favorite. There was sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves, bamboo with pork and vegetables, and lots of green vegetables with varying flavors, all locally grown. A couple of us also were brave enough to try the spicy salsa!
In another village, we were able to see some of the local women weaving and see and purchase their handicrafts. The trek eventually led us to a glorious waterfall! Almost everyone jumped in to enjoy the cool water and take in this beautiful area, which we had entirely to ourselves.

The following day, we also had the opportunity to learn about Thai tea through visiting an Assam tea plantation. We then enjoyed the fruits of our labors and got to try the tea!
A highlight of the Chiang Rai excursion was the White Temple, a contemporary temple made entirely of white materials and glass. This provided an insight into a more modern interpretation of Buddhism, which we continue to learn about in depth and explore as a key part of Thai culture!
